73 Venice Film Festival
On the 31th of August the 73rd Venice Film Festival was opened. Traditional celebrations of the season have been canceled for the victims of the earthquake in Italy. Totaly in the competition there are 20 films. And this is a real “battle of the Titans.”
This year the festival was opened by the picture “La La Land” by the author of “Obsession” Damien Shazella (not as usual by blockbusters). Starring: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The film tells the love story of a young singer and jazz pianist.
Impressive and a master list of competition films. Emir Kusturica will present “Walk along the Milky Way” (a love story during the Bosnian War, played by himself in duet with Monica Bellucci). Wim Wenders turned back to the three-dimensional cinema and will show “The Last Days of Aranjuez”, where the main role was played by Nick Cave. The film of Andrew Dominik would be submitted “once more with feeling”, which is part of the new album, Cave «Skeleton Tree». This is the first record of the musician, composed after the death of his son Arthur an over a year ago.
American Classics Terence Malik will present his new documentary film “Journey of Life” with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. The author of “Killer”, Danny Villeneuve, who is now preparing to shoot a sequel to “Blade Runner”, will show the science fiction film “Arrival” with Amy Adams. This picture is about contact with aliens, landed on Earth. The second film will present a fashion designer and director Tom Ford ( “A Single Man”): “Under the cover of darkness,” with Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, which tells a disturbing story about the owner of an art gallery, and her problems with her husband.
The famous film Andrei Konchalovsky from Russia will present the film “Paradise.” As part of the “Venice Classics” program will show the restored copy of “Stalker” by Andrei Tarkovsky and “Eyes black” by Nikita Mikhalkov.
One of the biggest hits of the non-competitive program will be the film from Mel Gibson “Conscientious objection” about pro-pacifist medic Desmond Doss, who refused to shoot at the front of World War II and awarded the medal “For Courage”. Another loud premiere is two episodes of the series “Young Dad”, which is responsible for the formulation of the author of “Youth” and “Great Beauty” by Paolo Sorrentino. The film tells the story of a fictional Pope Pius XIII, played by Jude Law.
Bright Venice event is non-competition screenings of the new film of our Ukrainian director Miroslav Slaboshpytsky ( “Tribe”) “Luxembourg”. This film is again was made with non-professional actors, tells the story of the Chernobyl disaster.
Jury of the Venice competition this year is headed by the author of “American Beauty” and the last two James Bond films, Sam Mendes. Assist him the widow of musician Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, actress Gemma Arterton, Nina Hoss, Zhao Wei and Chiara Mastroianni, director Joshua Oppenheimer (the author of the documentary “Act of murder”) and Lorenzo Vigas Venezuela. The festival will last until September 10.
First prize was already awarded. Polish director and screenwriter Jerzy Skolimowski was awarded the “Golden Lion” for his contribution to world cinema.
