Gigi Hadid was accused of racism
Model Gigi Hadid decorated the cover of the new issue of the magazine Vogue Italia. Photographer Stephen Meisel was responsible for the photography. It was for this photo session that Gigi Hadid was vigorously discussed because her skin was too retouched – “repainted” in an unnatural bronze for the model. Users in social networks noted that instead of photoshop it was possible to remove a cover with a darker skin. And so, it looks like racial discrimination and ridicule.
Upon learning of the hype, Gigi hurried to apologize to readers and her fans. The girl published a photo taken immediately after the shooting for the ill-fated cover. In the photo, the color of Hadid’s skin looks quite normal. The model asked to understand that she can not control the subsequent processing of her pictures. Her powers end when she leaves the set. Gigi asked for forgiveness, because she did not want to offend anyone, to humiliate or take away someone’s opportunity to prove herself. She hopes that this case will become a science for other editions and teams in the future. According to Hadid, in the fashion industry there is a problem of diversity, which must be paid attention in time and try to remedy the situation.
“Please understand that my control over photography: 1. does not exist in terms of creative direction 2. completely ends when I leave a picture, and anything that is done with a photograph in a post is not completely controlled. Bronzing and photoshop is a style that S. Klein has done for many years, and I believe that this was expected from the shooting (to show me in a different way creatively). BUT, although I understand that Vogue Italia’s intentions were, it was not done correctly, and the fears that were raised are valid. I want to refer to this for those who have been offended by editing / retouching / painting the cover. Please, know that everything would be different if my control over the situation was different. Regardless, I want to apologize, because my intention is never to reduce these problems or to distract the opportunities from anyone else, and I hope that this can be an example for other journals and teams in the future. There are real problems associated with presenting in fashion – our responsibility is to recognize these problems and communicate with them in order to work in a more diverse industry, “wrote Gigi Hadid.
